Soft water and ischaemic heart disease: a study of two towns in Northern Ireland.

چکیده

Portadown and Lurgan have had very similar populations during the years 19501970 and the water supply to each has been established for the past 50 years. Portadown draws its very soft water by aqueduct from two reservoirs on the western face of the Mourne Mountains (at Foffany and Spelga), and Lurgan is supplied by less soft water drawn from Lough Neagh which is at that area largely supplied by the River Bann. The total hardness for the Portadown water supply is about 13 parts per million, and for the Lurgan water about 95 parts per million. There is no reason to suppose any deviation from these figures over the past 20 years.

Hardness of drinking-water and cardiovascular disease.

In the past 10 years or so evidence has been accumulating about an environmental factor which appears to be influencing mortality in particular, cardiovascular mortality and this is the hardness of the drinking-water. There is an inverse association between indices of water hardness and cardiovascular death rates ; the softer the drinking-water the higher the death rates. This association has b...

BLOOD PRESSURE COMPONENTS AS PREDICTORS OF ISCHAEMIC HEART DISEASE MORTALITY IN THE WEST OF SCOTLAND

The relative importance of systolic blood pressure (SBP) versus diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in predicting the risk of ischaemic heart disease (IHD) mortality is controversial. We have re-examined SBP compared to D BP and other combinations of SBP and D BP in predicting the risk of IHD mortality in a long-term cohort study oflO,541 men and women in the West of Scotland. During a mean fo...

Lack of association between serological evidence of past Coxiella burnetii infection and incident ischaemic heart disease: nested case-control study

BACKGROUND Coxiella burnetii causes the common worldwide zoonotic infection, Q fever. It has been previously suggested that patients who had recovered from acute Q fever (whether symptomatic or otherwise) may be at increased risk of ischaemic heart disease. We undertook this study to determine if past infection with Coxiella burnetii, the aetiological agent of Q fever, is a risk factor for the ...

British Regional Heart Study: geographic variations in cardiovascular mortality, and the role of water quality.

In a study of regional variations in cardiovascular mortality in Great Britain during 1969-73 based on 253 towns the possible contributions of drinking water quality, climate, air pollution, blood groups, and socioeconomic factors were evaluated. A twofold range in mortality from stroke and ischaemic heart disease was apparent, the highest mortality being in the west of Scotland and the lowest ...

UK Renal Registry 18th Annual Report: Chapter 6 Comorbidities and Current Smoking Status amongst Patients starting Renal Replacement Therapy in England, Wales and Northern Ireland from 2013 to 2014.

Data on comorbidity at the time of start of renal replacement therapy (RRT) were submitted to the UK Renal Registry (UKRR) for 7,786 (58.1%) incident patients between 2013 and 2014. In 2014, 11 centres provided data on 100% of new patients and eight provided data for less than 5% of new patients, highlighting the continued wide variation in the completeness of data returns. In 2014, comorbidity...
